Gaining Quantity Surveying Expertise Through Hands-On Project Experience

Can you share a little about your journey before joining our apprenticeship programme?

Before joining the apprenticeship programme, I completed my A levels in Construction, Business Studies and Sport at St Patrick’s Keady High School, which strengthened my interest in hands-on learning and led me to pursue a Higher Level Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying.

The opportunity to gain real work experience alongside my degree, travel to live projects and learn from experienced professionals aligned perfectly with my career goals and made CET Connect the right choice for me.

Could you highlight some key experiences from your apprenticeship journey?

One of the key experiences for me was visiting a live data centre project in Milan, where I met the local team and saw the project progressing on site. Being able to ask questions and learn how the team manages the project has been extremely beneficial to my development.

Are there any specific skills that you have developed, such as any tools or resources you have found most helpful in advancing your skills?

I have significantly developed my communication skills by working closely with mentors across Ireland and maintaining regular contact with clients. Teamwork has also been a key area of growth, as every project requires close collaboration to ensure work is delivered efficiently.

Can you explain how mentorship has played a key role in your journey and how this has helped you?

Mentorship has played a key role in my journey because everything was new to me at the start, and I was encouraged to ask questions to achieve the best results. If I made any mistakes, I was supported and encouraged to learn from them, which has helped build my confidence and development.

What are three key pieces of advice you would give to future applicants looking to kickstart their career?

Some advice that I would give to future applicants that want to kickstart their career is  to take the opportunity if it comes – it is a rewarding pathway that allows you to develop quickly, while gaining the chance to travel and build connections worldwide.

The second piece of advice that I would give is to be yourself in the interview and have confidence in yourself as it will support you as you progress through the apprenticeship.

The third piece of advice is be prepared to work hard and you will see the benefits early. Working hard will help to improve your communication skills, understanding of industry terminology and IT skills, which will help you to stand out as an apprentice.
